What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is one of the oldest forms of manual therapy, dating back more than 2,000 years. It originated in ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and the Middle East, where it was used to support health and wellness. Cupping therapy uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying soft tissues instead of applying pressure. This lifting action helps decompress the muscles and fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles. When the fascia becomes tight or develops adhesions, it can contribute to stiffness, discomfort, and restricted movement.

FAQs

Does cupping therapy hurt?

Most people find cupping comfortable and relaxing. You'll feel a gentle pulling or lifting sensation rather than deep pressure. The amount of suction is adjusted to your comfort level.

Will cupping leave marks?

Most clients develop temporary circular marks, especially over tight muscles or areas with fascial restrictions. These marks are usually painless and typically fade within a few days to two weeks.

What should I do after cupping therapy?

Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and give your body time to recover. Mild soreness is normal and usually resolves quickly.

Is cupping included with every massage?

Cupping therapy is offered as a complimentary enhancement with qualifying 90- and 120-minute massage sessions. To book cupping therapy, select Customized Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, or Trigger Point Therapy when scheduling your appointment, then leave a note requesting cupping therapy at least 24 hours before your appointment. This allows us to prepare and ensure the TheraCup is available for your session.

Who should avoid cupping therapy?

Cupping may not be appropriate for everyone. It should generally be avoided over open wounds, sunburned skin, active skin infections, or certain medical conditions. If you have any concerns, we'll review your health history before your session.
